Kicking It Casual: How Canada's Soccer Stars Dress Off the Pitch

Celebrating Homegrown Excellence with Richie Laryea and Kamal Miller

For the very first time in history, Canada will host the FIFA World Cup right here on home soil, which means there’s never been a better time to celebrate Canadian excellence.

Since our founding in 1954, we’ve taken pride in celebrating homegrown greatness — from supporting local tailors and craftspeople to championing local brands and businesses to cheering on Canadian talent on the global stage.

Thanks to our partnership with the Canadian Men’s National Soccer Team Players Association, we were able to catch up with standout players Richie Laryea and Kamal Miller and outfit them in some of our most exciting Canadian brands.

While with us, they took some time to talk style, performance, and Canadian pride.

Q. How would you describe your style off the pitch?

KM. “Off the pitch, I’d say my personal style is very comfortable. I like clothes where people aren’t able to guess the brand — I just want everyone to see me and say, ‘He looks clean, he looks professional, he looks comfortable.’”

RL. “I would say it’s kind of the way I play; I’m a high-energy, aggressive player so I like to put on outfits sometimes that are high-energy, depending on the season, to describe and paint the picture of who I am.”

Q. What’s one wardrobe essential every guy needs?

KM. “One thing every guy should have in his wardrobe is a tuxedo. I think you need to be able to switch it up at all times.”

“You never know what call you might receive; something might come up where you need a tuxedo, so you’ve got to be ready.”

RL. “The one thing every guy should have in his wardrobe, especially as they get older, is a nice suit.”

The most versatile suit a man can own is a navy or grey, two-button, single-breasted suit made from a mid-weight, high-twist wool. This will see you from work to weekend to special events, and can be mixed and matched with many other business-casual wardrobe essentials, like sweaters and knits, chinos, jeans, and more.

“Like I always say: look good, play good.” — Kamal Miller

Kamal’s Picks

Kamal told us he prefers to keep things clean and tidy with his wardrobe – similar to his composed playstyle on the pitch. In-store, we showed Kamal an array of Canadian brands that suit his personal style best, with a focus on elevated essentials, high quality materials, and creative takes on classic styles.

Q. Finish this sentence: Canadian style is…

KM. “... expressive, simple, and beautiful.”

RL.  “... the best in the world.”

Richie’s Picks

On the pitch, Richie’s dynamic, exciting playstyle is irresistible on the eye, which influenced his selection of styles to try in-store. Richie opted for styles he could wear to work or a workout, and with plenty of inspiration from preppy, Ivy league style — reimagined with a modern twist, of course.

For Canada, from Canada

Whether on the pitch or off it, confidence starts with feeling like yourself. That's why Richie and Kamal gravitate toward effortless, versatile items — something Canada's best designers have mastered for decades.
