While florals are always a popular choice during the onset of the spring and summer months, this season, floral patterns and motifs are making a much bigger impact across the menswear industry.

Some are already embracing the trend while others are still yet to experiment with wearing florals. Here, we show you how to make the most of florals, from balancing patterns to picking pieces to wear.

Balancing Patterns

Floral patterns are just like any other pattern and should be considered by their main components: colour, scale (i.e. size), and composition.

Whether you’re wearing multiple items featuring patterns, which may or may not include multiple floral pieces, or your outfit only features one patterned piece, deciding how to pair them together is the secret to pulling them off.

Size and Scale

It’s easy to go overboard with patterns but so long as you follow the “maximum of two” rule, you’ll likely get it right off the get-go. That one’s quite self-explanatory — don’t exceed two patterned pieces per outfit. For example; a floral shirt worn with striped pants would require a solid jacket or any other combination of the three.

Are your floral patterns large in size? Juxtapose that with a smaller print on another item, or vice versa. When patterns are roughly the same size, they tend to clash as the human eye doesn’t instinctively differentiate between them at first.

Colour and Composition

Of course, you can’t forget to consider colour as well. Floral patterns typically include quite a variety of colours within them. From the flower petals to the stems to the background colour itself, every pattern usually features at least three different colours. The key here is to include and/or reference those colours in other items you’re wearing.

Is blue a prominent colour? Wear another item showcasing lots of blue in it to call back to the pattern. Is the background of the floral pattern white? Try to include white accents into another item you’re wearing to help it pop.
