The Remarkable Career of Steve Pawlak
Harry Rosen’s first and longest-serving employee reflects on a lifetime in menswear.

When a 16-year-old Steve Pawlak walked into Harry Rosen for the first time in 1956 — just two years after the first store opened its doors on Parliament Street, and before Steve even knew how to knot a tie — it's hard to imagine he could have envisioned what was to come.
There are very few people who can say they've spent their entire professional life helping shape a company. Fewer still can say they were there almost from the very beginning. Steve Pawlak can say both.
If he ever held an employee card, it would have had the number one in the corner and handed to him by Harry and his brother Lou themselves. For quite some time now, and by quite some distance, Steve has held the title of longest-serving employee in the Harry Rosen organization. After more than 70 years, he is retiring on October 2, 2026.
By 1956, the original Harry Rosen location on Parliament Street was a modest yet intriguing proposition. Harry was a young entrepreneur with a clear vision and the conviction to see it through — not to mention an incredible talent for understanding and catering to the needs of his expanding clientele. And in Steve Pawlak, he found someone who wanted to learn everything he could.
"He made it very clear that whatever we do, to do it with integrity," says Steve Pawlak. "To sell a suit or piece of clothing is to sell the whole store, to sell ourselves."
It’s a philosophy Steve has carried throughout his entire career; one that has remained constant even as the world around him continued to change.
Over more than 70 years, Steve Pawlak has witnessed Harry Rosen evolve from a small Toronto shop into one of Canada's leading luxury menswear destinations, and the definition of a well-dressed man continue to evolve.
When Steve began, Harry’s idea of how men’s clothes should look and fit was very much aligned with a formula of measurements. Then, after several trips abroad, came the “good-looking clothing” revolution, which broke the bounds of Harry’s rigid formula and introduced a new idea: the designer’s perspective.
The Cambridge look inspired by softer tailoring worn by the Madison Avenue ad execs, the irresistible influence of Italian designers like Giorgio Armani in the ’80s and ’90s — Steve was central in supporting Harry Rosen introduce these concepts to the Canadian customer for the very first time.
Through many moves and many different eras — including from Parliament Street in Cabbagetown to Richmond Street in the Financial District; from the gradual casualization of suits and ties to sportswear and athleisure (and seemingly back again); a one-location store to a national organization — Steve was there to see it all.
What has remained constant throughout Steve's career is his approach to his ever-evolving rolodex of clients.
"Once you introduced yourself to somebody, you'd find out what they did for a living, how they liked to feel in clothing, and what we could do for them," he says. "We put together a wardrobe rather than sell them a suit and send them out the door.”
Some of the men he serves today belong to families he has dressed for decades. Others represent second, third, even fifth generations of the same family. The relationships he has built over 70 years are not simply professional courtesies — they’re the substance of a career, the thing that makes it mean something beyond the sum of its transactions.
Steve Pawlak retires on October 2, 2026. He leaves behind a client list that spans generations. He leaves behind colleagues who will tell you, without hesitation, that he is the standard against which they measure themselves. And he leaves behind a version of Harry Rosen that he helped build — not the buildings or the brands, but the culture.
The belief that this business is, at its heart, about people. Steve’s career is a reminder that while brands, trends, and environments may change, the fundamentals of great service are timeless. Listen. Understand. Know your product. Know your client. And, above all, make sure the person walking out the door feels better than when they walked in.
As he prepares to turn the page on his extraordinary career, one thing is certain: Steve Pawlak hasn't simply witnessed our history. He's an integral part of it.
