The original Salvatore made his first pair of shoes in 1907, at the age of nine, for his sister’s confirmation. Seven years later, he set off for Boston from Italy, to seek his fortune and ended up in Hollywood, where his made-to-measure women’s shoes attracted the attention of movie stars. Returning to Italy in 1927, he set up his workshop in Florence, still patronized by celebrities and as famous for his avant-garde designs. Hugely influential, he died at the age of 62.
The family company still bears his name. Superbly well made, Ferragamo shoes and boots for men continue to be ranked among the world’s finest. And, his accessories live up to that same quality.
